Something We Miss Today, Art Blakey

The late 1950’s If I could go time-traveling,  I would definitely head to the USA in 1958.  From January to December, there was so much music happening. Obviously Elvis Presley and Ray Charles were on the hit chart, but the Jazz scene was still hot.  Miles, Coltrane, Messengers, Bill Evans, Quincy, Lionel Hampton, Ella, and so on.  West Coast Jazz was also hot, Stan Kenton in Hollywood, Art Pepper, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker.  I can imagine how exciting these days were.  Radios, records, night clubs, so much delight.  I’d be a witness of changing music history.  Maybe I’d work for Atlantic Records! https://youtu.be/r7PDD6gB2EM?si=qsZ551jdEFJy8i0H 1989 Sweet Basil Let’s talk about Art […]

1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky

In my College days I never have searched on web posts talking about traditional music however, I assume tons of them are already published.  So I feel like going easy, smooth sailing about the trad music talk.  Because I was kind of a “new man” to the trad music world.  I started to play traditional music when I was in L.A.M.A. (L.A.C.M.) age 29 for the basic fingering classes.  I also started studying music history seriously that same year because it was a required subject.  Actually the lectures were so interesting and I was obsessed.  Both experiences of traditional music made my career entirely thanks to my teacher! Most of

Tom Cruise Generation #1 “Top Gun”

1986 Pete Mitchell Like most other high school boys, I was a big fan of Tom Cruise, and still I am.  Top Gun has had the most influence on me at that age, not only the film but soundtrack. I mean, who wouldn’t? Pete Mitchell had everything that attracted boys such as ambition, strength, weakness, smiles, eyes, passion, loyalty, humor, occupation, status, friends, rivals, great boss, beautiful girlfriend, and what else?  We can’t be like John Rambo, but may have a slight chance to be Pete Mitchell! Come on, I know.  You could say It’s a movie, he’s the hero, it’s fiction…  So what?  Those things are in the movie

You’ve Got a Song, Carole King

In the classroom While I enjoy teaching music for such a long time (but not too long), I really feel some gaps of generations especially in college.  Students are from sophomore to senior, the age of 19 to 21, some like that.  Generation is changing slowly but obviously. I’m going to talk about Carol King today.  In my classroom I remember, around 2010, students may know Carol King by name, by songs. About 50 percent of students recognized her songs when I played her CD.  No students knew her in 2020 and merely found the title even after I played her famous songs.  Well, this is the truth in Japan.

Miles Davis and me

1989 September, Indigo Blues in New York I was just a kid and did not really understand music and how significant it was for me.  I didn’t even know who Miles Davis was.  Fortunately my buddy Steve and I got tickets for the night, the second show started at 10 p.m.  Guess what?  how long did they play?  The show ended at 2 a.m.  They played for 4 hours almost non-stop.  And he played the whole show without looking at the audience.  I thought he wasn’t playing for us, but for what?  We watched his back and side for 4 hours, which was a really difficult time because his music
